My neighborhood is adjacent to Liberty Station, the preserved but repurposed former Naval Training Center, San Diego.
The USS Recruit is one of the remnants leftover from the NTC days. It is the only commissioned USN vessel that never floated. It was built on land and used as a training platform for new recruits. It was decommissioned in the early 80s when the new computerized inventory system had no way to classify it as a "vessel."
